Swords are the best all-around melee weapon in Minecraft. They have a sweep attack that hits all nearby enemies when used on the ground, making them ideal for fighting groups of mobs.

Which sword material is best?
Netherite is the best, offering highest damage (8), durability (2031), and knockback resistance. Diamond is a close second and much easier to obtain. Use iron for early game, then upgrade to diamond once you have the resources.
Avoid: Gold swords have very low durability (32) and are not worth the resources.
How do I get Netherite?
- Mine Ancient Debris in the Nether (Y: 15-44, requires diamond pickaxe)
- Smelt Ancient Debris into Netherite Scrap
- Craft 4 Netherite Scrap + 4 Gold Ingots = 1 Netherite Ingot
- Upgrade diamond sword to Netherite at Smithing Table
Why can't I mine diamonds with my stone pickaxe?
You need at least an Iron Pickaxe to mine diamonds. Wood and stone pickaxes can only mine coal, copper, and other basic ores.
What is sweep attack?
Sweep attack is a special move when attacking while on the ground. It hits all nearby enemies in front of you within a 90-degree arc. Sweep attacks deal damage equal to the attack damage of the sword + 1, but only 50% of the sword's attack speed.
Should I enchant or repair first?
Always enchant first, then repair. You cannot enchant an item that has been used in an anvil (it becomes too expensive). Use Mending to keep your sword repaired through normal gameplay.
Should I enchant my sword with Sharpness or Smite?
