About Minecraft Redstone
Redstone is Minecraft's equivalent of electricity. It allows players to create complex contraptions, automated farms, and intricate mechanisms. Understanding redstone is essential for advanced players who want to move beyond basic building.
Understanding Redstone Signal
Redstone signals travel through redstone dust and can power adjacent blocks. The signal strength ranges from 0 to 15, and decreases by 1 for each block it travels. Understanding signal strength is crucial for building complex circuits.
Signal Producers (Inputs)
- Lever - Toggle between on/off states, provides signal strength 15
- Stone Button - Pulse output for 10 ticks when pressed
- Wooden Button - Pulse output for 15 ticks when pressed
- Stone Pressure Plate - Detects players and mobs, deactivates when empty
- Weighted Pressure Plate (Light/Heavy) - Detects items or entities with different sensitivities
- Tripwire Hook - Detects entities crossing the wire
- Daylight Detector - Outputs signal based on sunlight level
- Sculk Sensor - Detects vibrations (1.19+), each sound type produces different signal
- Calibrated Sculk Sensor - Detects specific frequencies with direction
- Lightning Rod - Can send redstone signal when struck by lightning
Transmission Components
- Redstone Dust - Carries signal up to 15 blocks, can be placed on blocks or ground
- Redstone Torch - Constant signal source (strength 15), can power adjacent blocks
- Repeater - Extends signal up to 15 blocks, adds delay (1-4 ticks), prevents backflow
- Comparator - Extends signal without delay loss, measures container contents, compares signal strength
Mechanism Components (Outputs)
- Piston - Pushes blocks up to 12 blocks when activated
- Sticky Piston - Pushes blocks and holds them when retracted (holds for 1 tick then releases)
- Dispenser - Launches items (arrows, fire charges, etc.) when powered
- Dropper - Drops items downward when activated
- Note Block - Plays instrument based on block behind it, pitch based on block above
- TNT - Explodes when powered (use wisely!)
- Piston Extension - Moves blocks for various mechanisms
Containers and Storage
- Hopper - Collects items into containers below. Can be locked with redstone.
- Dropper - Dispenses items into containers or as drops
- Dispenser - Can place items like buckets or place blocks
- Trapped Chest - Emits signal based on items inside (weaker than comparator)
Redstone Tips and Tricks
- Use sticky pistons with slime blocks for flying machines
- Observers detect block state changes, not just updates - great for crop growth detection
- Comparators can measure how full a container is - useful for item counting systems
- TNT ignites when powered from the side or below, not from above
- Redstone dust updates its signal when any adjacent block changes state
- Use repeaters to prevent signal loss over long distances
- Quasi-connectivity allows pistons to be powered by blocks above them
- Redstone torches can burn out if toggled too rapidly
- Comparator in subtract mode outputs signal equal to (signal - 1)
Common Redstone Builds
- Automated Farms - Use observers to detect crop growth and pistons to harvest
- Automatic Smelting - Hoppers + furnaces + redstone for continuous cooking
- Doors and Gates - Lever or button control with sticky pistons
- Hidden Passages - Sticky pistons with blocks for retractable walls
- Redstone Clocks - Observers or repeaters create repeating signal pulses
- Item Sorters - Comparators detect item types for automatic sorting
- Cookie Dispensers - Automatically feed villagers or power fox farms
- Elevators - Sticky pistons + slime blocks for vertical movement
New in Recent Minecraft Versions
- Crafter (1.21) - New block that automatically crafts items from ingredients in hoppers
- Copper Bulb (1.21) - Creates redstone signals when exposed to light changes
- Sculk Sensors - Added in 1.19, detect various vibrations
- Calibrated Sculk Sensor - Detects specific frequencies with directional detection
